VARIATIONS

The same stone changes?

A Variation is a departure from the original. With Bearstones, it
has the same meaning. The coloration or mold for the production of
the Bearstone is changed and so is not exactly like the original issue.
Some Variations are quite distinct, others very minor.

In our Bearstone Listing we have tried to make note of all the
Variations. Many times you can find a Variation by looking for the
RS designation on the understamp. (You can read about RS in the
Bearstone Basics.) Most of the recent Variations (1998 & later) can
be found by using the RS.

There are, however, quite a number of variations that are not found
by using the RS designation. Prior to 1998 there were relatively few
Bearstones with RS even though there were some dramatic Variations.

MISPELLINGS AS VARIATIONS?

There have seen several Bearstones released that have misspellings
on the Understamps. A couple of these Bearstones would include
Elliot The Hero and Bailey...A Little Bit Of Honey. Elliot has the
Bearstone Collection spelled "Beatstone Collection" and Bailey has the
Parade of Gifts spelled "Larade of Gifts" on some issues.

Are these true variations? Our answer is no! It is certainly of
interest to the serious collector, but not significant enough to be
classed as a variation. We have seen some publications denote these
"typos" as variations. In reality they are just typos.

A significant Understamp change would be a variation. Such an example
would be #228320 Sandy Claus...Have A Simple Christmas. This is a
variation from the exact mold of #228320V S. Kringlebeary...Have A
Simple Christmas. Here the whole name changed, not a single letter.
Another example is Bailey...A Little Bit Of Honey and its true
variation Bailey...A Little Bit Of Honey HBM. The HBM was added to
the Understamp to denote significance!
