BOYDS BEAR VARIATIONSTHE "UNKNOWN" VARIATIONUpdated 05/18/2004 #2006 BAILEY IN THE ORCHARDThe Variations of Bailey In The Orchard![]()
On the Left is the Original Version of Bailey In The Orchard. On the Right is the RS Style of Bailey In The Orchard. The Original Version The Original Version of Bailey is many times just referenced as "Paw Print On The Jug." Below is a picture of the back side of of Bailey showing clearly the paw print on the jug.
We have inserted an "X" in the image indicating the location of the paw print when it was moved to the dress. It has always been noted that the movement of the paw print in this Bearstone is "THE" variation. This was based on the assumption that the RS Style and the paw print move was concurrent or happened at the same time. However, our research now indicates this is not so! What you are about to read are facts about this variation that have never before been verified or published! So, FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER, ANYWHERE... HERE ARE THE REAL FACTS! Bailey In The Orchard #2006 was mold produced and copyrighted in 1993. She was first issued in 1993. This Original Version issue of Bailey continued into 1994 and into the 21E. This version has the paw print on the jug. Within the 21E the paw print moved to the dress. This movement occurred between the 503rd piece and the 1462nd piece in the 21E in 1994. However, it is significant that the Bearstone is NOT YET TITLED RS STYLE. This means that the paw print on the dress is present before the RS Style! One thing to also note is that the paw print on the jug is hand painted. When the paw print is on the dress, it is imprinted into the resin and painted black, just like the current ones. Below is an image of the Understamp of a RS Style.
It has now been established that the RS Style began within the24E. We have data showing that 24E/#1333 is not RS Style. This means that the RS Style began between this piece and 24E/#3327 (as seen in the above image). We would like you to view the two opposing pictures of Bailey at the top of this page showing the Original Version and RS Style. Can you find the differences? Give up? You should because you could spend a lifetime looking at these and NOT FIND ANY DIFFERENCES! There are NO mold changes from one variation to the other. They are all exactly the same! This then calls into question the use of the RS, commonly referred to as "Resculpted." Obviously, Bailey was not Resculpted! The Boyds Company has stated that the RS indicates a change in the factory where the Bearstone is produced. We do recognized that the majority of RS Bearstones have undergone mold changes, but it is a fact that RS does not automatically mean "Resculpted." To read more about RS GO HERE CONCLUSIONS +There are THREE variations with Bailey In The Orchard. 1. Paw Print On The Jug With Original Version- Released 1993 to 1994 in Editions 1E to within 21E. THE "UNKNOWN" VARIATION 2. Paw Print On The Dress With Original Version- Released within the 21E in 1994 until within the 24E. There are only about three editions of these out there making it a somewhat exclusive variation. 3. Paw Print On The Dress With RS STYLE- Released 1995 to 1996 from within 24E to retirement. +There are no mold changes among the variations, only the movement of the paw print to the dress and the addition of RS to the Understamp in these Variations. +RS does not mean "Resculpted," even though the use of "Resculpted" for RS can be generally acceptable. ***ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS*** We gratefully acknowledge the following contributions to this study: Lynda Larson of Texas-Collector 21E/#1462 Julie Christensen-Site Author of Oh Boyds Bear Museum 21E/#503 Janet Marchiani of Colorado-Collector 24E/#3347, Images RS Style & Understamp Bob & Mary Felicito of Virginia-"Die Hard" Collectors 26E Marilyn Browning of Dayton, Ohio-Collector 23E/#2120 Kari of Texas-Collector 23E/#1760 Cindy Moore-Collector 24E/#1333 If you would like to contribute to the continuing study of Bailey In The Orchard, please Email us at: bailey@thebearcollector.com We remind you that the information on this page is Copyrighted ©2000 TL&B Enterprises Any use of this information written or unwritten without the express written consent of TL&B Enterprises is strictly prohibited. |
