How The Collector's Handbook
Came To Be
It was not that many years ago that we traveled around to almost
every small town in a five state area looking for the old and retired BearstonesTM. Why did we do it? We were collectors! We were full of excitement and enthusiasm, but not very bright.
Well, not very bright about Bearstones.
(We didn't have stupid written on our foreheads.)
In our travels we found many BearstonesTM. All of these
are displayed in our cabinet now. Some are grim reminders of how
unknowledgeable we were. And some are the result of just dumb luck to have made the right decision to buy.
Sound familiar? Yes, we know it does. We were classics!
Somewhere between the first Bearstone and "umpteen" small towns
a subtle, yet persistent, change was occurring. We started asking
questions. The more questions we asked, the fewer answers we got.
And the answers we did get weren't always right. Frustrating?
You bet it was! We called the "big" dealers and value guide
people. We asked shop owners. We searched the internet. For
every question we asked, we had two more questions. And still,
we continued to make that "stamp" on the forehead look like a real
possibility. We bought a BearstoneTM on an internet auction for four
times what we could have at a local shop! What a bargain.
Sitting on the floor of the living room with our small cache of
"extras" and a cabinet half full with our current collection, we
decided we would let the bears talk to us. Surely, they could
answer some of our questions. And the key was found! Nothing
could be gained by looking at a single BearstoneTM, except questions.
It was the duplicates, setting side by side. One, two, three and
sometimes the accumulation of fifteen of the same BearstoneTM sitting
there looking at us. Fellow collector's, the bears spoke.
Those little critters talked to us about editions, copyrights,
paw prints, boxes, cards, packing, style numbers, variations,
exclusives, PEs, Canadian issues, defects, early releases, LEs,
hallmarks, values, current markets, value guides, assets, missing or incorrect parts of a purchase.... Those little bears have
told us just about everything. What we read and what we heard
were assumptions until the bears verified them as facts.
We have compiled and organized this information into what we call
"The Collector's Handbook"
